But for the absolute beginner here\u2019s our basic SCUBA diving dictionary to help you get started.<\/p><ol><li><p>SCUBA: Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, which refers to the equipment used by divers to breathe underwater.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Regulator: The device that attaches to the cylinder and delivers air to the diver through a mouthpiece.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Buoyancy Control Device (BCD): The vest worn by divers to control their buoyancy underwater.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Dive Computer: A device that measures depth, time, and nitrogen absorption to calculate a safe ascent profile.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Cylinder: The tank that holds compressed air for the diver to breathe underwater.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Mask: The device that allows the diver to see clearly underwater by creating a pocket of air around the eyes.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Fins: The devices worn on the feet to help the diver move through the water.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Octopus: A secondary regulator that is used as a backup in case the primary regulator fails.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Pressure Gauge: The device that shows the amount of air remaining in the cylinder.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Dive Flag: A flag used to indicate to others on the surface that divers are in the water.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Nitrogen Narcosis: A condition that can occur at deeper depths due to the effects of nitrogen on the body.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Surface Interval: The time spent on the surface between dives.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Dive Plan: A plan made before diving that includes the maximum depth, duration, and safety stops.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Decompression: The process of slowly ascending to the surface to allow the body to release excess nitrogen absorbed during the dive.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>Buddy System: A safety protocol where each diver has a partner to watch over them and assist in case of an emergency.<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><\/ol><p>By familiarizing yourself with these basic SCUBA diving terms, you will be better equipped to understand instructions and communicate with other divers.
